L’appel des braisesAbout
In a liminal space where walls rise at the same pace as they fall, the choreographer-performer transforms, shedding layer after layer on stage, combining strangeness, animality, and a connection to the sacred as the three equal foundations of a queer identity.
This virtuosic and visceral composition opens a conversation about solitude, the divine, shame, authenticity, and the masks we wear, immersing the audience in a triangular sensory experience where music, light, and movement intertwine. Blending dizzying vulnerability, bubbling fluidity, insect-like physicality, and a queer sci-fi aesthetic, this first full-length solo work introduces audiences to Charles-Alexis’s choreographic universe. L’appel des braises is an ode to danced movement as a spiritual manifesto, a celebration of the inner fire, and an invitation to reconnect with our animal nature.
The work had its world premiere at Agora de la danse in Montreal in October 2023, followed by performances at Série Danse 10 in Ottawa, Espace DCL in Lévis, and The Citadel in Toronto. L’appel des braises was also selected for the official program of the Parcours Danse biennial in 2023. In 2025, the work was selected and presented as part of the official competition at the Masdanza Festival in the Canary Islands, Spain.
